Many of you had wondered what the "ramparts" were that were referred to in the first stanza of the Star Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key. The NPS website below contains photos/videos of the park and there is a lot of information about the historical and cultural background of the park, as well! If you look at the walls surrounding the fort, you can get a better picture in your mind when you think about what the battle in 1812 must have been like. Waiting in the darkness behind the walls of the fort, as bombs exploded overhead, raining down molten shrapnel - shaking the very ground you stood on, while soldiers on both sides stained the earth with their blood - through it all, our flag and soldiers prevail, meeting the dawn triumphantly!
